If you enjoy vodka, you know that true differences from product to product are often tough to distinguish — and making a spirit that’s more or less like something you already drink just isn’t the Colorado Gold style. So we challenged ourselves to be a true vodka originator, not an imitator, which led us to seek out the best, purest ingredients we could find.
Thomas Jefferson once said that hemp is “of the greatest importance to our nation.” Indeed, hemp was grown for thousands of years and was once an essential component of fabrics, foods, fuel and more — but has since been replaced by often inferior materials. (Get the hemp story here.) With all the chatter happening around Colorado’s eventual legalization of hemp production in 2013, we began to wonder how we could work this world-renowned ingredient into our vision for a one-of-a-kind vodka. Then we bought a couple hundred pounds of it from Canadian farmers and got busy trying.
The concept of actually fermenting and distilling a mash from hemp — not just adding it to the spirit — was new, but getting the result we were after was painstaking, to say the least. We tried different parts of the plant, different cooking times and temperatures, and a wide variety of enzymes, along with a lot of tasting, note-taking and learning. Finally, perseverance paid off, and by 2015, we were ready to take our hemp wash to our small, German-made Holstein still, blend it with pure Colorado snow-melt water, and carbon-filter it with our own unique system. The result, we’re extremely proud to say, is the first and only U.S.-produced vodka fermented and distilled with real, natural raw hemp.
Colorado High is a super-clean, easy-drinking vodka that delivers a luxurious mouthfeel from the natural oiliness of the hemp. There’s no need to brace yourself for the typical vodka bite, because it’s a mellow spirit that goes down smooth. And the finish is just as nice, with the natural hemp adding subtle sweetness and nuttiness.
